Pennilabium struthio is a rare, miniature epiphytic orchid species native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and parts of the Himalayas. Known in Thai as Ueang Khem Thong (เอื้องเข็มทอง), it features tiny growth habits, short stems, and successively blooming pale yellow-and-red flowers with a distinct fringed white lip.
Plant Characteristics
Type: Miniature epiphyte (grows on trees or mounted slabs).
Leaves: Short, elliptical, unequally bilobed, and often twisted at the base.
Flowers: About 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall, pale yellow with dark red or brown dots, featuring a white, fan-shaped, fringed lip and a creamy yellow spur.
Blooming Season: Summer (typically June to August).
Growing Conditions
Habitat: Lowland and hill tropical rain forests, usually near streams in shady conditions.
Light: Medium, bright indirect light (shade to bright indirect light).
Water: High humidity and frequent moisture; let it dry lightly between waterings. Best grown mounted on a small slab or wood piece rather than in a standard pot.
